Meeeeeee

By hissychick | January 9, 2009

Our littlest miss has decided that her verbal skills must now develop at the same cracking pace as her ability to bolt away from her bewildered mother at any and every given opportunity.

Over our holiday break miss E started to speak regularly and very proficiently in two and three word sentences (eg Daddy’s keys, Mummy sit, more milky) and to confidently and loudly great her nearest and dearest by name and with a hug. It has thrilled A no end to be greeted in the morning by an excited little sister bellowing “Hello Abi!!” before throwing her little arms around her bigger sister’s waist. I will admit that hearing an excited little voice calling “Mummy! Mummy! Hello Mummy!” makes it easier to haul my sorry sleepy behind out of  bed in the morning too.

It seems that person and possession are behind two of E’s favourite new past times.  The first comprises naming the owner of various items around the house before carrying said item to its correct owner and beseeching them to take charge of their property. Never mind that Mummy might be on the toilet, she should have Mummy’s phone and she should have it NOW.

The second is a sure sign of the coming apoclypse that is the terrible twos, and that is an awareness of herself and therefore her dog given toddler right to own everything in sight and to refuse anything that is requested of her. I was delighted the first time I heard my littlest girl refer to herself gleefully as “Ebie“. I laughed even harder the first time mr hissychick asked the girls “Who wants to watch the Night Garden?” and E excitedly squealed “Meeeee!!” as she raced over to the TV.  However it was a chill that ran down my spine when my eighteen and a half month old refused to let me read her beloved “Where is the Green Sheep” book, loudly declaring “No way! Mine!“.

Bids for personal freedom and the development of an individual identity aside, audacious and entirely parent unfriendly as they are, there is much to be said about the convenience that comes from your child developing a command of the English language.  On the one hand, bed and naptimes have become somewhat simpler, in that E provides a far clearer indication as to whether she will readily acquiese to sleepylala land or whether we are in for yet another bedtime battle. Popping off the boob to say “sleepy” whilst pointing to her cot means we are home free. Vigorously shaking her head and screeching “open door” and we are not.

Screeching “Mummy! Poooooooopy! Mummy!” ten minutes into naptime means exactly that, excrement in her nappy and the chance of a decent two hour break for me sleep for my highly energetic daughter similarly straight down the toilet.

Still I have to be proud of the fact that we have produced another highly intelligent daughter. Before I know it, E will be joining her older sister in outwitting and outlasting her perplexed mother, as evidenced by the following recent exchange:

Melbourne Nanny: A darling, I want you to be a good girl for Mummy and Daddy. When I ring up next week I want Mummy to be able to tell me that you have had no time outs.

A (turning triumphantly to me): Did you hear that Mummy? Nanny says you are not to give me any more time outs OK?

Which Mummy needs a bex and a lie down after that thought? Meeeeee.
