Why I blog

By hissychick | February 28, 2008

As I said earlier, I’ve been tagged by the lovely and talented Averil and my task is to explain why I blog. Apparently I am to provide you with three reasons as to why I choose to inflict my often inane drivel on you people inside the computer.

Hmm. Allow me to pause and gather my thoughts. Having random and unwelcome flashbacks to senior high school English, and writing essays under exam conditions.

Now where was I? Right:

1. Because I have been a journal writer and diary keeper of sorts since I was 10. Not the most unique or original response in the world, but there you go. I must say that I am very very thankful that the www wasn’t around in my tender prepubescent years. The very thought of my childish scribblings about my first grade five crush (each ‘i’ topped with a heart instead of a dot of course)….the bust exercises I had read about in that seminal preteen novel Are you there God? It’s me Margaret….the very idea that each 0 and 1 has been carefully backed up on a server to haunt me to my dying day just makes me cringe.

Scratch that. It’d be pretty damn funny.

Anyway I still have that diary. And an even sillier emo crap filled one from my teenage years. Hidden so carefully that I have no idea where they are. Thank whatever deity you choose to invoke that I tore up the one from my early twenties.

Which somehow leads me to point two where I will now contradict myself:

2. I blog so that my daughters will one day have a record of the journey to their conception, and their early years. So that in their teenage years they may gain some understanding as to why their mother is as painfully embarrassing as she is. So that when they embark upon their own journey to motherhood they will glean some insights into the transformative process that this adventure entails, that their own mother actually gets it. Most of all, I want them to know just how much they were wanted and loved from the get go.

And yeah. I want to ensure that they seriously reconsider the kero bath filled nursing home for dear old Mum in her dotage. Even if I do threaten to send them back to the lab more often than is appropriate during the course of their childhood.

3. I blog because I enjoy writing, and as blogging is dynamic you can let your skills and subject matter evolve whilst having a record of the very process. If that sounds like nonsensical wankery, it probably is.

This blog evolved from an online diary that I kept on a site called Essential Baby, and all entries can now be found buried in the archives on this site. To me it is rather fascinating to see how my writing has developed from short, emoticon and conception abbreviation terminology filled records into a place where I write about anything, everything. And nothing. Where I have a record for posterity of little glimpses of she who is hissychick and her beloved little family.

Writing has become a hobby, my equivalent of the scrapbooking craze which seems to have swept up the majority of SAHMs that I know of in its diecut and fancy lettered wake.

I always said that if I took up scrapbooking it was time for me to run screaming back to work. Blogging however, I feel is a far worthier outlet for this non domestic goddess. And a great excuse to ignore the housework, husband and kids outlet for the mind when one spends the majority of the time engaged in less intellectual pursuits.

I do not harbour any aspirations towards being a published author (although I already am. And that will be the topic of another post if you guys are interested). I just really and truly enjoy me some stringing of the words together. And stuff.

Phew. I can certainly crap on. Next I’d like to tag the following suspects- if you haven’t been tagged already: Descentia, Kathie and Mr hissychick. Better still, if there is anyone else out there who would like to provide their three reasons for blogging then go for it. And send me the link. It’s time to share the love people.

  2. Thank you for tagging me.

Yeah, I’d like to know what you wrote too, that’s published. I’ve never met any author that I’ve read, mostly because they are dead! Lol. Just tells you how much pop-culture I’m into. OK, some I read are like in UK or USA, so not so crazy a fan to want to hunt them down.
